Whether you want to improve your performance, prevent injuries, recover after surgery or return to competition with confidence, we offer a personalised medical assessment and a plan tailored to your body, sport and goals.
Dr Mirjam Steunebrink, a Sports Medicine Physician with more than 15 years of experience, looks at your health, training, symptoms and the way your body moves. This helps us understand what may be limiting your performance and support you in progressing in a realistic, safe and sustainable way.
Train Better. Compete with Confidence.
Sport should make you feel strong, healthy and capable. However, an injury, surgery, recurring pain, fatigue or slower-than-usual recovery can stop you from enjoying your sport and progressing as you would like.
At Compass Clinic Marbella, we help you understand your body better so that you can return to training, competition or regular activity with greater confidence. We do not only focus on an injury or a symptom: we look at the factors that can affect your performance, from mobility and strength to training load, rest, recovery and your overall health.
Whether you are a football player, runner, cyclist, triathlete, HYROX athlete, swimmer, padel player, tennis player or golfer—or you regularly practise another sport—we adapt the assessment to your needs. We can also help you prepare in the best possible condition for challenges such as a marathon, half marathon, triathlon, HYROX event, open-water swim, cycling event, tournament or a new sporting season.
Our goal is to help you:
- Improve your physical and sporting performance.
- Train with more knowledge and confidence.
- Prevent injuries, overload and recurrence.
- Recover after an injury or surgery and return progressively to your sport.
- Understand why your performance has declined, your energy is low or your recovery is taking longer.
- Prepare appropriately for a competition, event or sporting season.
- Receive comprehensive medical guidance on training, recovery, nutrition, sleep and healthy habits.
We offer dynamic musculoskeletal ultrasound with Doppler, allowing us to assess muscles, tendons and joints while you are moving. This helps us evaluate certain symptoms more precisely and guide a plan that is relevant to your sporting activity.
When appropriate, we can complement your assessment with exercise testing with ECG, Firstbeat heart-rate variability (HRV) analysis and 24-hour monitoring. These tools help us understand how your body responds to training, rest, stress and the demands of everyday life.
Sports Medicine Services at Compass Clinic
Improve Your Sports Performance
We assess your physical condition, current training level and goals to identify areas that may help you improve. We look at mobility, strength, exercise capacity, body composition, recovery and other relevant factors, so you can train with a more personalised strategy.
Prevent Injuries and Recurrence
If you experience symptoms during training, frequent overload or recurring injuries, we assess possible causes and risk factors. You will receive practical guidance on training load, rest, recovery, mobility, strength and a progressive return to activity.
Recover and Return to Competition
Returning too soon after an injury or surgery—or returning without an appropriate plan—can increase the risk of recurrence. We help you assess your progress, regain confidence and plan a safe return to training and competition. When needed, we coordinate your care with Physiotherapy, Orthopaedics and other Compass Clinic specialists.
Prepare for a Competition or Sporting Challenge
If you are preparing for a marathon, half marathon, triathlon, HYROX event, race, cycling event, open-water swim, padel tournament, tennis tournament, golf event or football season, we provide an assessment tailored to the demands of your sport and your personal goals.
Assess Fatigue, Low Energy or Reduced Exercise Tolerance
If you feel more tired than usual, take longer to recover, have lower energy or feel that your performance has declined, we provide a comprehensive medical assessment. We investigate possible factors related to training, rest, overall health and exercise capacity.
Dynamic Musculoskeletal Ultrasound with Doppler
We use Doppler ultrasound to assess muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints. Assessing relevant structures during movement supports a functional evaluation and helps guide diagnosis and recovery planning.
Exercise Testing, ECG and Recovery Analysis
Depending on your needs, we offer exercise testing with ECG and Firstbeat HRV assessments. Twenty-four-hour monitoring can help us understand your response to training load, recovery, stress and daily lifestyle demands, allowing us to provide more personalised guidance on training, recovery and healthy habits.
Women’s Health and Sport
Hormonal changes can affect energy, recovery, strength, bone health and response to training. We provide assessments adapted to each woman’s needs, including issues related to perimenopause and menopause and their impact on sport and exercise.

We start by understanding your situation: the sport you practise, how much you train, your goals, whether you are preparing for a competition, any symptoms you have and any history of injuries or surgery.
We carry out a medical and functional assessment of mobility, strength, movement patterns, painful areas and your general physical condition. When necessary, we complement this with musculoskeletal ultrasound, exercise testing, ECG, Firstbeat HRV analysis or other tests.
You will receive a personalised and easy-to-understand plan. Depending on your needs, this may include training guidance, recovery recommendations, recurrence prevention, nutrition advice, further tests, treatment or coordination with other specialists.
Sports Medicine in Marbella: Frequently Asked Questions
Is Sports Medicine only for professional athletes?
No. We see professional, federated and competitive athletes, as well as amateur athletes who train regularly, want to improve, prepare for a sporting challenge, prevent injuries or better understand how their body responds to exercise.
Can you help me prepare for a marathon, half marathon, triathlon or HYROX event?
Yes. We provide assessments tailored to the demands of endurance and high-intensity events. We can review your health, mobility, strength, exercise tolerance, recovery and the factors that may help you arrive at your competition in better condition.
Do you see football players and team-sport athletes?
Yes. We help football players and athletes in other team sports prevent injuries, recover from overload, prepare for the season, improve physical condition and return progressively to training and competition after an injury or surgery.
Can you help me return to competition after surgery?
Yes. We assess your progress, mobility, strength and functional capacity to guide a gradual and safe return to activity. When necessary, we coordinate your care with Physiotherapy, Orthopaedics and other Compass Clinic specialists.
What if I have pain but do not know where it comes from?
We carry out a detailed medical history and a medical and functional examination. In some cases, dynamic musculoskeletal ultrasound with Doppler can help assess muscles, tendons and joints during movement to guide the diagnosis more effectively.
Can you help me prevent future injuries?
Yes. We review factors such as training load, rest, mobility, strength, recovery and injury history. The aim is to help you understand what may be contributing to the problem and reduce the chance of it happening again.
Do you assess fatigue, low energy or poorer exercise tolerance?
Yes. If you have unusual tiredness, recover less well or notice that your performance has declined, a medical assessment can be helpful. Depending on your case, we may recommend further tests and review factors related to training, rest, nutrition and general health.
What is Firstbeat and what is it used for?
Firstbeat is an analysis system based on heart-rate variability (HRV). Through a 24-hour measurement, it can show how your body responds to training, rest, stress, sleep and the demands of your everyday routine.
It is not only about how much you train. It helps us understand how your body is responding to physical and mental load. The measurement does not diagnose anxiety and does not replace medical or psychological assessment when needed, but it can provide objective information to better understand patterns of well-being and recovery.
Can Firstbeat be useful if I have stress, anxiety or sleep problems?
Yes. It can be useful during a period of high stress, difficulty switching off, worry, fatigue or major life changes. The measurement can show when your body has a greater physiological stress response, when it is able to recover and whether your sleep appears restorative.
Based on the results, Dr Mirjam Steunebrink can suggest realistic guidance on rest, physical activity, sleep, recovery and daily habits to help you regain balance progressively.
Why is it important for a Sports Medicine Physician to interpret my Firstbeat results?
Data is more useful when it is interpreted in the context of your health, physical activity and daily life. Dr Steunebrink considers your medical history, training, goals, symptoms, previous injuries and personal circumstances before recommending changes.
The result is not simply an app report, but a professional assessment that connects the data with a practical plan for well-being, recovery and performance.
Can I use Firstbeat Life in my own language?
Yes. The Firstbeat Life app can be configured in several languages, including English, Spanish, German, Dutch, French and Italian. During your appointment, we help you set up the device and app so you can use them comfortably.
Do you take perimenopause and menopause into account for athletes?
Yes. Hormonal changes can affect recovery, energy, strength, bone health and response to training. We adapt the assessment to help you maintain a healthy, safe and sustainable sporting routine.
